is it adviseable for me to work in mental health??

Derrick Cacioppo: Do you have any idea how many people work in mental health because they suffered some kind of mental health issue themselves? If you can do it, apply for the job. This area of health care is screaming for people to fill positions.

Ricardo Rozelle: Legally your medical history should have no effect on whether or not you would get the job. If you get an interview, I certainly wouldn't volunteer the info that you had been treated there and, truthfully, your medical history is none of their business. HIPPA laws prohibit them from accessing your records and, by law, your medical history cannot exclude you from gaining employment anywhere.Good luck!...Show more

Toney Flaten: the job is at a sort of occupational health place. its mainly for people with schizophrenia, but they take on all sorts of mental health problems. they help people find work, get them out doing things cooking etc. my job would be to help out with these things and to do one to! ones, just having a general chat and supporting them. thanks for the answers so far!!!

Lanita Reichman: If you are qualified, there is no reason why they shouldn't accept your resume and application. I've been to doctors whose staff were basically patients before they got their job with that same office later on. If you have a great sense of empathy and if you have a calming effect about you, I know that's the kind of mental health assistant I'd want around.Go for it. If they don't hire you, it's likely they found someone more qualified. But it is against the law to discriminate against you based on your history of depression. Usually it takes "someone who's been there" to really have a good understanding of a job that deals with people who have mental issues. If anything, I think it would be a plus since they do already know you and know how much you've improved. I know when I applied for work at places where someone there already knew me that I got the job. I! 'm not saying you are going to get the job, but -- if you have! equal qualifications as the other applicants -- I think you'd be the one most likely to be chosen. All they can do is either hire you or not hire you. Just remember that you're a person worthy of being hired by anyone and that you have a lot to offer whoever eventually hires you. Being turned down for a job won't mean no one will hire you, it usually just means they found someone else who would need less training than someone with less experience.Good luck! I hope you at least apply for the position....Show more

Florencio Dingle: I would apply for it and they can not hire you because of your past hx of depression. Also I want you to take into account how stressful the job can be I have worked in mental health for 3 years now and you have to be able to talk and understand mental health illnesses and know how to deescalate patients and have the strength to help other employees to take the patient down and put them in 4 point restraints( assuming the job is like a ment! al health inpatient care and not an office job)...Show more

Abby Herwood: Go for it! If you think you are healthy enough to do the job effectively what does it hurt to apply?! And if they hold the fact that you sought help out for your own personal issues against you, then they are definitely not the right place to be working anyways!

Lourie Mcroberts: There is no reason why you could not work in mental health. However, I would avoid working in a setting where you, yourself have received services. It is very, very important to keep your work life as separate as possible from your private life. Mingling the two is begging for trouble.

Ellis Cellar: You know what.. try itGo ahead applyI think ud be pretty good at it because u've been there and done that. You might be able to relate to some people that come in with issues. If u've felt what they feel then u can be a big help with talking to them and earning they're trust so they open up. If they ask you why u ! want the job even after all that time with depression u want to relate ! to other people and show that they can over come depression like u did and ur there to help. Have at itHope it works out well =) Buenas suerte (good luck)...Show more

Bruce Calise: Go on in there and talk it out with them. A job that interests you may be the best medicine in the world. I worked with handicapped children once and all my "problems" disappeared.
