Shad Bushweller: Global warming or cooling is directly caused by activity cycles of the sun which cause sun spots. Until we discover what causes the sun to vary its activity levels and what causes the sunspots we will never know what causes our climate variability. We do know for sure that when sunspot activity is high we have warm climate periods and when the sunspot activity is weak we have ice ages. This has been clearly identified by more than 3,000 years of scientific observation by at least 4 cultural groups. Wilbert Shellgren: Global warming is the rising average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Since the early 20th century, Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two thirds of the increase occurring since 1980. W! arming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain that most of it is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels. These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations.Climate model projections are summarized in the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They indicate that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1.1 to 2.9 °C (2 to 5.2 °F) for their lowest emissions scenario and 2.4 to 6.4 °C (4.3 to 11.5 °F) for their highest. The ranges of these estimates arise from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations. An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, and a probable expansion of subtropica! l deserts. Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would ! be associated with continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Other likely effects of the warming include more frequent occurrence of extreme-weather events including heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfall, species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes, and changes in crop yields. Warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe, with projections being more robust in some areas than others. If global mean temperature increases to 4 °C (7.2 °F) above preindustrial levels, the limits for human adaptation are likely to be exceeded in many parts of the world, while the limits for adaptation for natural systems would largely be exceeded throughout the world. Hence, the ecosystem services upon which human livelihoods depend would not be preserved. Most countries are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), whose ultimate objective is to prevent dangerous anthropogenic (i.e., human-induced) ! climate change. Parties to the UNFCCC have adopted a range of policies designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions:10:9 and to assist in adaptation to global warming.:13:10 Parties to the UNFCCC have agreed that deep cuts in emissions are required, and that future global warming should be limited to below 2.0 °C (3.6 °F) relative to the pre-industrial level. A 2011 report of analyses by the United Nations Environment Programme and International Energy Agency suggest that efforts as of the early 21st century to reduce emissions may be inadequately stringent to meet the UNFCCC's 2 °C target....Show more
Christopher Calcano: Bottom line is that Milankovitch Cycles were never meant to predict warming or cooling trends on the scale that everyone in these forums seem to think they were. Prior to Global Warming hysteria, everyone in the scientific community disregarded Milankovitch for this very reason. People just didn't care!Once Warmers thought they could build a case ! that the Milankovitch was a useful tool to sell Global Warming, then Mi! lankovitch became a weapon in the AGW arsenal.Look closely at the duration of the cycles and their variability and you will see that their precision is + or - several thousand years.Transgressive marine cycles in the geological record tend to be serrate in nature, but have time spands that last at a minimum 5 million years and some last 30 million years. Trying to micromanage thermal cyclicity on the scale of 12,000 years is a horrible horrible joke! The "peaks" alone in the historical Milankovitch exceed 20,500 years in duration and can be as long as 50,0000 years in duration. Walter Scordino: What is global warming, and how is it affecting the Earth and its inhabitants? Global Warming is sometimes referred to as the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is the absorption of energy radiated from the Eart! h's surface by carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere, causing the atmosphere to become warmer. The greenhouse effect is what is causing the temperature on the Earth to rise, and creating many problems that will begin to occur in the coming decades. For the last 10,000 years, the Earth's climate has been extraordinarily beneficial to mankind. "Humans have prospered tremendously well under a benign atmosphere," (Bates 28).Today, however, major changes are taking place. People are conducting an inadvertent global experiment by changing the face of the entire planet. We are destroying the ozone layer, which allows life to exist on the Earth's surface. All of these activities are unfavorably altering the composition of the biosphere and the Earth's heat balance. If we do not slow down our use of fossil fuels and stop destroying, the forests, the world could become hotter than it has been in the past million years. Average global temperatures have risen 1 degree Fahren! heit over the last century. If carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gase! s continue to spill into the atmosphere, global temperatures could rise five to 10 degrees by the middle of the next century.

Once you convert your own life style to a ! greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.if your interested feel free to contact me personally at www agua-luna comWe definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane). One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how itâs explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, et! c)Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until theyâre finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave len! gth energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal! masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.Itâs pretty easy to see the results..Melting ice sheets & glaciersFloods & droughtsGreat hurricanes & cyclonesSeasonal extremesSeasonal phenomenaâsSpecies extinctionNew & resurgent diseasesThere are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)If you interested I offer several DIY alternative guides to walk you step by step threw Greener living, how to run your car on alternative fuels and being self-sufficient, at agua-luna com orwww agua-luna comHope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions if youâd like assistance in making your first self sufficient steps, Iâm willin! g to walk you step by step threw the process. Ervin Overbee: These cycles tend to be very long term. The current situation is different. Atmospheric gases can and do retard heat transmission....CO2, methane and water vapor. CO2 occurs naturally and it's natural formation and distribution is measurable. Most methane is currently locked up in frozen deep sea methane ice and in tundra. Warming will release it ! and add to the problem. Man made CO2 is a different story than 'natural CO2 and it can be measured by the industrial odds and ends that accompany it in deeply bored ice cores. Ice cores show that before the industrial revolution of the early 1800 there was very little industrial soot and going back even further there was none. So we can tell what part of the CO2 spectrum is man made and what part is 'natural'. Today a significant amount of CO2 is man made and the data shows that. Currently our CO2 load stands at 386ppm....before the industrial revolution it stood at 284ppm, an increase of only 4ppm in 10,000 years as shown in ice core samples. At 400ppm the greenhouse effect is strong enough to stop a significant amount of IR radiation from escaping into the night sky so there's no scientific reason for heating NOT to occur. The amount of man created CO2 increases about 12 to 15ppm per decade....this brings us perilously close to the the 400ppm mark. One can argue w! ith some of the data collected, and even argue with the effects so far,! but nobody can argue with scientifically proven heat physics. This is serious business. I think some of the deniers may be trying to prevent a world wide panic by playing down this aspect of the situation. Maybe that's a good thing. A better thing would be to stop adding CO2 to our paper thin atmosphere....Show more

Elfreda Grossen: Global warming/cooling is cyclic and has been going on for 4 billion years.
Dionna Doyel: It does contain methane, but not much.
Raul Tllo: Nope. The timing is all wrong. The cycles are pretty regular. We had a warming Milankovic cycle about 12,000 years ago, it got us out of the last Ice Age. Since then we (until recently) were in the slow cooling that follows a warming cycle. The next warming cycle isn't due for 80,000-90,000 years. Also, the Milankovic cycles aren't some magic. They cause an increase ! in solar radiation that would be EASILY detectable. But measured solar radiation shows the slow decline related to the slow cooling mentioned above. This graph shows the slow decline in temperature, after the last Ice Age, and before global warming.http://www.globalwarmingart.com/images/b/bb/Holoce......Show more

You know what causes the earth to get warm? The SUN.
Dedra Furguson: They explain long term trends. Shorter term trends are caused by a myriad of other factors. Bacheous is incorrect if he assumes that short term trends such as that rela! ted to warming since the Little Ice Age for the last 300 years, is rela! ted to to Milankovitch cycles. Perhaps the general cooling for the last 6000 years is but that isn't relavant to the more recent cooling and warming IMO.
Marco Stolarz: Farting has methane, yes, but it's already factored into the atmospheric load to expect a certain amount. Think of a buffered system such as your body. You can expect a certain amount of a chemical and it won't hurt you because your body can absorb it and use it. Over a certain amount and it can cause problems.Same thing with methane from farts. Sure, it releases methane, and methane does cause warming. But the atmosphere needs SOME methane to keep us all warm and cozy down here. It won't produce enough emissions to actually push us over the threshold, though. You need massive industrial-strength emissions of methane to do long-term damage....Show more

We call these greenhouse gases because they refer to the analogy of 'the greenhouse effect'. The analogy used is to depict that the greenhouse traps or seals in the heat. The volume of gases is linked with a rise in temperature as they trap heat produced from the sun and the infra-red radiation produced by all things. Although farting is an involuntary biological bi product of digestion we can affect the amount of CO2 being produced through the burning of fossil fuels....Show more

Valentine Michaud: Cow farts especially
Soraya Coodey: Nope. As others have said, we were in a natural long term cooling period due to Milankovitch Cycles. Greenhouse gases have overwhelmed that.To Jim Z -- No, there is no assumption that the short term warming is related to the Milankovitch cycles. There is no possible way. We are agreed. The warming is too rapid to be related to anything natural. And that's the point. The warming! is not related to the Milankovitch cycles and is therefore not related "coming out of the little ice age".
