Why is so much money spent on special education in the U.S.?

Emeline Albracht: As another said, FAPE (free appropriate public education), that passed in '75. 10% of the population receives special education. Your PTA and school boards should be advocating for gifted needs. What is needed is what is needed, its not an equal or fair distribution. You do seem to have a case for a reverse discrimination since your needs and programs are being cut. There must be a process for those that don't fall under the disabled category. Children with disabilities the families can file a due process hearing with DOE (dept. of ed.)...Show more

Malissa Porth: It is obvious that the school system is not spending enough teaching you because you vocabulary is very lacking at best and you need to spend more time trying to broaden your vocabulary versus worrying about someone else. You claim you take AP English; yet, you used the word "Retarded" to describe people with intellectual disabilities several times. Your ranting does not prove to me ! that you are "intelligent person" but instead just another spoiled rich kid. BTW, I was one of those "Retarded kids" when I was in school; yet, as shocking as it my seem I not only graduated high school but I also graduated college and did so with highest honors. If it is really of your concern, I graduated from a real college earning a real college degree and I did so while working a full time job at a real company (No, I don't spend it cleaning up after the "normal" people of society either). One more thing, "normal" people don't exist and I pray that some day you will become involved in a serious accidents just so what people with disabilities have to deal with from clowns, just like you, on an everyday basis....Show more

Ollie Hamiel: One might retort that these kids 'deserve' 'education' at their levels. (I contend that putting them in a chair and letting them drool is daycare, not education. They don't even know their names. But again, w/e.)But then, don't I and! the other gifted kids at my school deserve education at OUR l! evels? We are bored silly in the CP classes, but the district can't afford better-qualified teachers to teach higher-level/AP classes. So why would the district spend so much many teaching kids who can't even speak when they have kids wanting to learn Calculus BC?...Show more

Hipolito Rightmire: More money is not the answer; The teachers would say yes the unions would say yes and the superintendents would say yes. But the taxpayer will always say no. And no one pays the same amount. They tax you on the value of your home and that is wrong. Your home value should have nothing to do with funding schools. it's just the easiest way to get money from you. Just so they can spend it, or give it away. Take a good look at your local schools and the board of education building. The teachers only work 180 days a year, that is only 6 months. There is a break at thanksgiving and for x-mass and then there is something called winter break and how about spring break. All of these bre! aks are there just so there isn't enought time to have a summer session. the rest of the year the buildings sit vacant, If you had a business could you still be in business if you were open 180 days a year. I think not. I also really believe that if you are over 65 you should not have to pay any school tax. you have already payed enough. All you heard now from the teachers is the kids have to go to college, what do they teach the kids if more eduction is needed. when you ask your kids what did they learn in school today they always say nothing!!!!...Show more

Jene Licausi: You are not gifted you are a shining example of a selfish and ignorant person who exemplifies all the hurtful things people with disabilities have to live with from people like you a daily biases. these disabled kids are a hundred times better human being you will ever be and you have a lot to learn before your can even start to call yourself a decent person. Good luck because your really going to n! eed it where your heading.

Karey Dunken: As horrible as it might ! sound, I actually agree that their parents should have had abortions. I don't believe they are living happy lives. It is a daycare, and they way they are treated may seem like they are kings/queens, but it's not right to just let them sit there and drool. And it's true, they do. It's not their fault; and yes, they probably can't even be embarrassed about it because of their thinking levels. Each school district is different, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think education is funded by the state government, not the federal government. You can change this. There are special needs children out there that we can reach, but we can't reach all of them. Don't let anyone tell you you're a horrible person for what you said on here, it's your opinion, and it's blunt and needs to be heard....Show more

Emilie Santmyer: The individuals with disabilities act requires all k-12 public schools to provide free appropriate public education (FAPE) to students with disabilities regardl! ess of the type of disability and/or severity of disability. The schools and school districts would be breaking federal law if they did not.And there is no law requiring an individual obtain AP courses. I know this having both obtained special education services for a learning disability in math/epilepsy and AP courses for American government (which does not have math). So because there is no law, it is up to the individual states and local school districts about if they want to offer AP courses and how educated those personnel should be....Show more

Brittanie Zakutney: Well ?, did you get your answer? Did you ever take the time and talk to those "dumb" students? How is drooling a sign of being "dumb"? Or not being able to feed themselves? Did you ever consider that their condition doesn't allow them to move physically, such as the remarkable physicist Stephen Hawking? So for you and a few of the people who replied, Stephen Hawking should have been aborted. If you wo! nder how it benefits society - first, try reading A Brief History in Ti! me. Second, I challenge you to go volunteer for an organization like Special Olympics. I challenge you further to become friends with people with Special Needs. I'm talking about the ones that work and live in your community, that ARE a part of your community. Only then can you answer your own question. So I have a question for you. You decide to get married and decide to have kids. You do everything right and as a couple have all the "right" tests done to let you know if your child will have special needs. Those test come up negative and upon birth, the doctor informs you that your "normal" baby actually has Down Syndrome. Don't say that wouldn't happen because I know for a fact it happens every single day, to every race, rich or poor....Show more

Hope Lundmark: It's mainly because the parents/people caring for the retards could sue them for not trying to educate them. But that's still a shut ton of money for these dumb asses.

Vernita Robberson: Okay, I'm goin! g to ignore how you asked your question and try to answer at least part of the why.The federal government provides part of the money for special education students because it is so expensive. Some school systems have gifted education as a part of special education. In these cases, the school system has to provide supplemental education to students whose IQ is 130 or higher. But smart and gifted are not the same thing. You can take AP classes, do well, and still not be gifted. (I should know, since I did.)Finally, if school is that bad, perhaps you should check into the online programs. They have been advertising heavily recently. Maybe those would be more challenging for you. At the very least, you might be able to take extra courses at a college or something. In spite of what you may have been told, your education is your responsibility. Do your research and find out what you can do to improve it. You might help some others along the way. Even those kids you think shouldn't ! be in school....Show more

Lolita Deschamp: The basis of care stem! s from laws that were enacted by parents and advocates of special needs children who got them into place. Your parents and other advocates of A/P classes should band together and make it mandatory for all schools to offer these courses as well. If not, you should be allowed to attend a nearby school for such courses. Perhaps eliminating funding from special needs programs isn't the only solution to your problem.Thank God we're all different! It takes all kinds to make a world!...Show more
