King Bringle: Hi :) I attend ODU and I am very familiar with your options. I also considered being a PA (through EVMS), but I decided that I wanted to be a science teacher more; right now, I am double-majoring in Geology and Biology, with a secondary education certification. You sound like you're on the right track! Going to TCC will save you money; transferring to ODU to studying Biology + Secondary Education is a great idea (it truly opens up your options: you will have a full biology degree--thus satisfying all the EVMS pre-med/pre-PA requirements). Also, the teaching certification won't hurt either. To be a PA, you certainly need the practical experience. Volunteering at Sentara would be the best way to do that, and if you can become an LPN, that'd be great. (The LPN program is shorter than the RN one, but still good experience.)Another option is to major in Nursing + Pre-med/Pre-PA. (The Nursing program at ODU is verrrrry selective, so you want your grades high!) This ! will lead to your RN, and you can work at a hospital for a while before you get started on your PA program.ODU is a great school, and it works very closely with EVMS for a seamless transition into the medical school. Because ODU and EVMS are only a few miles apart, you may be able to fast-track and take classes at both places. Biology/Pre-med/Nursing here are all incredibly strong programs, and I am sure you will do fine.(Depending on how interested you are in teaching, you might be able to teach part time, and be a PA part time. Keeps things interesting!)...Show more
