Douglass Sarley: Onkyo system are a pretty good system for the money. Pioneer and Onkyo are the top rated entry level receivers and at the higher end you will find the Pioneer Elite and the Onkyo also. Onkyo is more known for receivers than speakers. I have used Onkyo and the higher end of the Onkyo Integra receivers along with Pioneer Elite for well over 35 years and never had any issue. Imogene Neiswander: The HT-s8409 is really fantastic for a packaged system. I would just get it. Your husband will love it!I wouldn't consider the Pioneer receiver that's been recommended an upgrade over the Onkyo TX-NR609 included in the package. The 609 is a fine receiver with a lot of nice features and it's a few whole pounds heavier than the Pioneer. Another step up in the Pioneer line would be closer to it's ! equal. Have an Onkyo 709 myself and love it!I wouldn't necessarily consider the Polks an upgrade over the included Onkyo speakers either. I've heard nothing but good things about the Onkyo speakers. The Polks can sound a bit on the bright side and not everybody likes them. Just because it's a packaged system, doesn't mean it has to be bad. Onkyo does it right!...Show more

In my humble opinion, since you may not be comfortable with your level of knowledge on the subject the variety of opinions and brand series will add to being back at square zero, just look at the number and quality of answers your getting right now. However, I have no doubt you are capable. However, the guess work is taken out of it if you get him a gift card from Crutchfield or Amazon then he can choose with you. He can explain why this speaker and that receiver are an excellent cho! ice and that you will love it. lol. He will be like baaabe! ! OMG! Kiss. lol. So, lets say that we're going to stay within range of your budget. You could get a Pioneer 921-K 7.1 audio home theater receiver for $279 from WorldWide Distributors, through Amaz*n. Get a set of Polk 5.1 705 speakers for $250, then add a pair of Polk Monitor 50 tower speakers from Newegg, for an additional $200. If you want the extra two speakers that take the 5.1 set to a 7.1 to be bookshelf models, go with a pair of the Polk Monitor 40s for $150, also from Newegg.
